Having Fun with Math, Enjoying π Day-Highlights of the BNBU Math Zone International Mathematics Festival Event

To celebrate International Mathematics Festival, or π Day, on March 14, the BNBU Math Zone hosted a four-day themed event series, Having Fun with Math, Enjoying π Day, from March 11 to 14. Combining on-site educational activities with interactive outreach events, the program attracted students, teachers, and parents from both inside and outside the campus. The event created a lively atmosphere and received enthusiastic feedback.

Fun Courses that Sparked Curiosity and Built Understanding

A key part of the event was a series of engaging educational courses on probability and statistics. All four sessions were fully attended, and students responded with great interest.

During the classes, teachers introduced the core ideas of probability and statistics through familiar real-life examples. Using the gashapon prize draw as a starting point, they helped students connect abstract mathematical concepts with everyday experience. Students then took part in bingo activities, where they explored probability patterns through interaction and play. In this way, mathematical learning became more intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable.

The courses were held at different locations during the event period:

March 12 — Yongfeng Primary School, Zhuhai High-tech Zone

March 13 — Jinfeng Campus of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Experimental School

March 14 — BNBU Math Zone International Mathematics Festival Event

Interactive Booths Brought Math Beyond the Classroom

Another highlight of the event was the off-site π Day stamp challenge. A variety of interactive booths were set up, featuring activities such as Shut the Box, Bo Bing, roulette, and sampling estimation. These games attracted many participants and created a fun, welcoming environment for mathematical exploration.

Through the activities, participants experienced how mathematics can be both practical and entertaining. They learned about probability, estimation, and strategy while actively taking part in the games. Each completed activity earned one stamp, and participants who collected three stamps could exchange them for a small gift. This simple design greatly increased enthusiasm and encouraged active participation.

Making Mathematics Visible, Tangible, and Enjoyable

Over the four days, the combination of science outreach courses and interactive activities helped bring mathematics closer to the public. Instead of appearing distant or abstract, mathematics was presented as something participants could see, experience, and enjoy.

The BNBU Math Zone remains committed to promoting mathematical knowledge and culture through hands-on experiences and creative activities. By creating more opportunities for public engagement, the Math Zone hopes to inspire more people to appreciate the beauty and value of mathematics.

This year’s π Day event has successfully come to an end, but more exciting mathematics-themed activities are still to come. Visitors are warmly welcome to explore the Math Zone and take part in future events.
