Alumna, Class of 2013, Public Relations and Advertising
Vice President of Public Relations and International Division, Himed Medical Investment Group
In most conventional narratives, entrepreneurs are expected to present an impressive track record: rounds of funding, ever-increasing valuations, or dominance in a particular field. But Lan Wanling's story offers a different answer.
She once made history for Macau on the international stage of top beauty pageants, becoming the first Miss Universe representative from Macau and placing among the global top fifteen at Miss World. She started businesses, experienced failure, and built ventures from scratch during the pandemic to provide urgent relief. Today, she is deeply involved in precision medicine, dedicated to promoting advanced technologies that can “benefit people's lives”. Her resume is filled with “cross boundary” attempts, yet it is difficult to define her with any single label of "success." But her path is clear. Every step she takes is directed toward value. And the starting point of this path was on the campus of BNBU.
BNBU Days: Planting the Seed of a "Servant Leader"
When Lan Wanling first entered BNBU, she majored in Film Studies. She wrote, directed, and starred in a stage play titled "The Pearl Maiden of Zhuhai," winning awards for Best Director, Best Organization, and Best Actress. "Because I achieved such good results, I felt I could try something more challenging in a new field." This experience sparked her desire to take on new challenges, leading her to switch her major to Public Relations and Advertising (PRA). Here, her academic studies and extracurricular activities formed an interesting synergy. As the head of the External Relations Department of the Sife club (now Enacts), she was responsible for external communications and public relations. She applied what she learned in class about market economics and organizational behavior to the club's projects, which aimed to achieve charitable goals through business means.
Looking back at her university days, she recalls Professor Guo Shaotang, then Executive Vice President of BNBU, sitting with students in the cafeteria and saying, "I hope you learn to become a servant leader." Those words took root in her heart. BNBU's focus on teamwork also taught her the value of complementary strengths. "I was never good at computers or making PPTs. But my roommate was excellent. She made the slides, and I contributed ideas." Their partnerships won many awards. The hours spent queuing for library seats and the lively discussions at Galleria remain warm memories.
First Startup: Losing Everything, Then Racing Against Time to Run a Mask Factory
In 2017, after winning Miss World Macau and reaching the global top 15, Lan Wanling turned down Emperor Entertainment and founded TAG Cosmetics. The brand's motto "Never limit yourself" reflected her belief in living authentically. But the startup failed. "I lost everything!" she recalls. She believed "a good product sells itself" but ignored market demand. She burned through her savings and quit a good job at a foreign company. Her father told her, "Treat failure as tuition. Learn from it."
Her first startup failure didn't push her toward safe choices. For Lan, entrepreneurship was never the goal, but a tool to solve problems. When the tool failed, she learned and waited for the next problem. That problem arrived with the pandemic in early 2020.
When the COVID-19 outbreak hit in 2020, the BNBU Global Alumni Association reached out to Lan Wanling, hoping she would organize fundraising to support Wuhan. She took on the task without hesitation, connecting alumni from around the world with just a mobile phone. Sleeping only four hours a day, she coordinated supplies and liaised with hospitals across different time zones. She helped the alumni association carry out "point to point" donations, ensuring supplies reached doctors directly. This involved repeated negotiations to clear logistics hurdles and prepare the necessary documentation. The solidarity of BNBU alumni moved her deeply. "At every step, a fellow BNBUer stepped up to help us solve one problem after another." Overseas alumni purchased supplies at any cost, while domestic alumni took over the transportation. Eventually, the supplies were successfully delivered to multiple hospitals in Hubei Province.
This experience revealed the needs and value in the healthcare sector. Through the government's green channel initiative to support the real economy during the pandemic, she partnered with an idle factory to produce masks. Mask machines cost 500,000 RMB each. She used a 1.5 million RMB order deposit to fund production on a " production to order" basis. When her partner quit and shareholders wanted to raise prices, she stayed true to her word. "At the agreed price, even losing money, we must deliver." She eventually persuaded another factory to take over and completed a government order of several million masks on time. This experience marked her transition from a "product first" mindset to a "market driven" approach. She later established a medical supplies trading company, connecting domestic and international orders, and finally achieved profitability.
Finding Her Anchor: Charting a Course for Medical Innovation in Hengqin
After the pandemic, demand for medical supplies trading dropped. Many who chased the trend left, but Lan Wanling chose to stay. As a Macau native, she looked to Hengqin, just across the water. She watched and waited for two years. She wasn't hunting for a hot trend. She was waiting for a field that matched her values. When Himed Medical Investment Group appeared with its mission of "high quality recovery for cancer patients," she knew she had found it. "I'm driven by value," she says. "First, I see if something has value, and also if it has economic potential and a future."
What moved her more was the team atmosphere, which echoed her lifelong pursuit of being a "servant leader." It gave her a sense of trust among kindred spirits. Without much hesitation, she joined Himed Medical Investment Group as Vice President of PR and International Division, treating it as a career worth building, not just a job.
Now she also promotes corporate culture and modern medical awareness. "I want people to know that most diseases can be cured if caught early." Her video channel "Wanling's Parlor" has evolved from showcasing company values to connecting remarkable people and championing women's voices.
At this point, her seemingly disjointed path has come full circle: from the "heart for public good" and "business acumen" cultivated at BNBU, to the "feminine charm" and "inner wisdom" she displayed on the pageant stage, to the "urgent relief efforts" during the pandemic, and finally to the "technology for good" frontier of medical innovation. She has not abandoned any of her past identities. Her entrepreneurial spirit has evolved from "building a company" to "pioneering a greater cause." The stage is larger, the responsibility heavier, but the core of her values has never changed.

To Those Who Come After: Learn by Failing, Find Your Ground in Confusion
Reflecting on her startup journey, Lan Wanling says "focus and carry on" is key. Her advice to students: "Just start. Cross the river by feeling the stones. Learn as you go." Pick partners wisely. "Find compatible, complementary people. Ideally those you've made money with." This echoes BNBU's teamwork values.
Her advice also carries a sense of pragmatic idealism. She does not encourage young people to blindly bet everything on starting a business. "First, stay grounded. Make sure your basic needs are met. Develop your judgment. Don't invest recklessly." However, she also encourages those with the means and the right opportunity to "try while you're still young." She admits that she herself has experienced confusion, even pausing for two years after the pandemic. "But you need to keep your spirit alive. If you get knocked down, you have to pick yourself back up."
She firmly believes that "heaven does not cheat the kind hearted, even if others do." Her advice to young people is this: "No matter how deep the mire you find yourself in, you must save yourself a thousand times, ten thousand times over." This is the lesson she has taken away from climbing out of her own low points.
When she looks back on her campus days, what she misses most is the library. It was a place of learning, of growth, and even of first love. In the years since leaving BNBU, she has experienced failure and betrayal, yet she has always remembered the counsel of President Guo, maintaining her kindness while staying sharp. "What BNBU gave me was not answers, but the courage to face the unknown." These words may well be the best description of her journey of growth.
